Scholarships for Undergraduate Students of French and Italian
Eligible undergraduates are invited to apply for the following scholarships to be awarded by the Department of French and Italian:
The Talle Family Merit Scholarship for Excellence in French will provide support of up to $12,000 for a full-time undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts majoring in French Studies. Recipients shall be in good academic standing and shall have demonstrated exceptional academic promise. The award will be made to a student in his/her junior year for use during his/her senior year. The recipient must be registered as a full-time student (taking a minimum of 15 credits per semester) during both Fall and Spring semesters of his or her senior year. Applicants must be a current junior in spring 2010, defined as intending to graduate between May 2011 and August 2011. (The definition of junior status in terms of student credit hours does not apply here.) This scholarship can be used only for the payment of tuition and associated fees. The recipient must be enrolled during the senior year on the U of M Twin Cities campus.
The Margaret J. Talle Study Abroad Scholarship in French will provide payment of tuition and fees for a full-time student (minimum 15 credits per semester) in the College of Liberal Arts majoring or minoring in French who will be enrolled in a study abroad program in France that is approved by the Learning Abroad Center. This scholarship may be used during the student’s junior year (Fall or Spring semester or both) or the Fall semester of the senior year. Recipients shall be in good academic standing and shall have demonstrated exceptional academic promise. Applicants should be a current sophomore or junior in spring 2010, intending to enroll in an approved study abroad program during Fall 2010 and/or Spring 2011. Students participating in programs only for the summer are not eligible to apply. This scholarship can be used only for the payment of tuition and associated fees.
The Department of French and Italian invites undergraduate students majoring or minoring in French and/or Italian to apply for French and Italian Study Abroad Scholarships to be used for expenses of study abroad during Summer-Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. The award may be used for a study abroad program of any length in Italy or any French-speaking country. One or two scholarships will be awarded, for amounts up to $3,000. Awards will be based on academic merit and the applicant’s essay.
Application and selection process:
Application materials will include an application form and an unofficial transcript, a letter of recommendation, and an application essay describing your previous engagement with French or Italian Studies and what receiving this scholarship would make possible. For the Margaret J. Talle Study Abroad Scholarship only, the essay should also address why you believe you have financial need. The letter of recommendation should come from that instructor who is best able to assess your academic and intellectual capacities. The award selection will be made by a committee made up of faculty from the Department of French and Italian.
