How to Read the news in the Target Language

– Go to sites such as Le Figaro, Le Monde, or La Repubblica. There are plenty more, but these are the most esteemed. Other noteworthy sites with unconventional news include Vice.

– If you have Google Chrome, install the Google Dictionary Extension, which can help you to easily look up a word just by clicking on it, and allow you to read the news or any other text in a foreign language without having to be interrupted by word searching. Once you have it installed, go to the Customize and Control button (The three lines in the upper right-hand corner) > Tools > Extensions and click “Options” underneath the Google Dictionary description. Set the target language to the target language. Voilà!

NOTE: There are flaws associated with this as Google has been know to butcher translations. This should not substitute for looking up words to understand their complex and contextual meaning, so use your best judgement when translating and use both this and the following Word Reference extension.

– Anyone who has taken a 3xxx level language course can vouch for the helpfulness of Word Reference. You can download the extension in and then either set the definitions to be in the target language or in English. The extension hangs out in the right corner of your browser and facilitates easy dictionary definitions and synonyms. It also gives examples of the different contextual and grammatical uses of the word.
